In-Vehicle Technology and Older Drivers

Body

Dr. Matthew Rizzo, PPC Human Factors associate and director of the UI Aging Mind and Brain Initiative (AMBI), is teaming with Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) in a study that looks at how older drivers interact with in-vehicle technology. The goal is to improve the safety of such drivers using technology like advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The three-year study was profiled in a recent IowaNow article, as well as on the front page of the Daily Iowan. It will use the SIREN driving simulator housed at the UI Hospitals and Clinics to explore whether ADAS can help mitigate the decline in attention, cognitive skill and reaction time that occure naturally with age.
